Natural Connections

The Mecklenburg County Stewardship Services, a division of the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Department offers a large number of environmental education throughout the year. These outdoor Recreation programs are designed for individuals of all ages and families alike. They are a great way experience the great outdoors in a positive learning environment.

Hike for Habitats

RibbonWalk Nature Preserve * January 5 * Start at 8 AM * All Ages
Come out to RibbonWalk Nature Preserve and help us raise funds for wildlife and wild places! Obtain sponsorships from friends, family, co-workers, etc., for each mile that you hike or run. All proceeds go to Partners for Parks for use in the County Nature Preserves. Please call Reedy Creek Nature Center at 704/598-8857 for more information.

 

Brunch with the Birds

Latta Plantation Nature Center * January 12 * 10-11 AM * All Ages * $5/adult, $4/child
Come out for a wonderful morning of birdwatching. We will take a short walk as we keep our eyes and signs of our feathered friends. Afterwards, enjoy Binoculars and field guides will be available.

Grand Opening: Center for Biodiversity Studies at Reedy Creek Nature Center

Saturday, January 26, 2008
10-11:30 AM at Reedy Creek Nature Center

Please join us to celebrate the newly completed addition to the Reedy Creek Nature Center. The Center for Biodiversity Studies at the Reedy Creek Nature Center will be home to a herbarium collection of more than 40,000 plant specimens, as well as a large number of preserved animals, that can be accessed for research opportunities. All ages are invited for the grand opening ceremonies that will include nature walks, activities, crafts and refreshments. Environmental Book/Author Discussion

Reedy Creek Nature Center * January 24, 6-7:30 PM and January 26, 1-2:30 PM * Ages 16 & older * $20/adult
“A Sense of Wonder” by Rachel Carson will kick off our new environmental book/author discussion. This will be a two part program. The first class will be an introduction to the author and you will receive a copy of the book. The second class will be a discussion of this amazing piece of work.

Carolina Hike Series: Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge

Depart: Reedy Creek Nature Center * January 26 * 8 AM - 6 PM * Ages 16 & older * $15/adult
Pee Dee Wildlife Refuge, located in Anson County, NC, is over 8,000 acres of birder’s delight. Waterfowl come to stay at the refuge December through February. Join us for this day trip to one of the best birding spots in the region.

Owl Prowl

McDowell Nature Center * January 26 * 6:30-8:30 PM * All Ages * $4/adult, $3/child
Ever wonder whoooo is watching you in the night? Discover the variety of owls that live at McDowell Nature Preserve as we take a night hike and attempt to call in some owls. Bring a flashlight and a mug for hot cocoa.

Environmental Book/Author Discussion

Reedy Creek Nature Center * February 7, 6-7:30 PM & March 1, 10-11:30 AM * Ages 16 & older * $20/adult
Our book discussion will continue with “A Reason for Hope” by Jane Goodall. This will be an inspiring look into the life of an incredible steward for the Earth and its inhabitants. This is a two part class. The first class will introduce the author and her works and you will receive your copy of the book. The second class will be a discussion of the book.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Saturday, February 16, 2008
9:30-11:30 AM at Reedy Creek Nature Center Join us at the Reedy Creek Nature Center to learn about and participate in this important annual event. You’ll become a citizen scientist as you learn some birding basics and collect data that will help in bird conservation efforts. Free bird-friendly coffee will be served. Binoculars and count sheets will be provided. This free event is open to all ages and will be held rain or shine. For more information, please call 704/598-8857.

Woodcock Walk

Cowan’s Ford Wildlife Refuge * February 22 * 6-7:30 PM * All Ages * $4/adult, $3/child
One of the earliest indicators of spring is the nightly ‘sky dance’ of the American Woodcock. Join us as we watch this aerial acrobat spiral 300 feet into the air then perform zigzags and loop-the-loops as he comes back down to earth. Can you believe all this is to attract a female? Please dress for the weather and bring a flashlight.

Wild Critter Care

Latta Plantation Nature Center * February 23 * 2-3 PM * All Ages * Free
Join Vicki Fisk from Carolina Wild Care for this fun and
informative program about wild critters. She will discuss what to do with the baby bunny your cat just dropped off on the porch or the bird that fell out of its nest. You’ll be prepared as the animals wake up from their winter slumber.
