This program is consistent with our stated mission: 

“The Mecklenburg Audubon Society is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and earth’s biological diversity.” 

 

Our program will provide grants to individual teachers or administrators in K-12 schools in the Charlotte metro area for the purpose of student instruction related to conservation, especially with regard to birds.  Schools must be nonprofit and tax-exempt with IRS public charity status, or be public entities qualifying under Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code.

 

Grants are intended to help with expenses of (1) physical improvements such as bird houses, feeding stations, native plantings, pollinator gardens, etc. located at school/community sites, (2) student equipment for birding such as binoculars, videos, field guides, etc. and/or (3) field trip travel to a significant bird site.  

 

Funds will NOT be provided for other expenses such as standard laboratory supplies, salaries or stipends, interpretative programs, and indirect costs.  Grant awards will not exceed $500.  

 

Applicants for these grants must provide a written description of the classroom/field project complete with a timeline and budget.  Projects must take place within the timeline specified.

Faculty receiving education awards:

 

• Must provide a brief, written report of the instruction to MAS by the end of the academic year (June 30, 2025).  

• Must return any unspent funds to MAS if the instruction is not completed.

Deadline for education grant submission is September 15, 2024 for funds for the 2024/2025 calendar year (July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025).  All applicants will be notified of our decision on their grant applications by October 10, 2024.
